Florida Power & Light Co. spokesman Mayco Villafana said there were storm-related power outages that began around 4 p.m. in the Merritt Island, north Melbourne and Titusville areas, with power restored to most areas by 7:30 p.m. Because the outages were scattered, he did not have a figure on how many customers overall had been without power.
The storm generated about 2,200 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes in northern Brevard and other parts of east-central Florida from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. That's more than 18 strikes a minute or more than one every 4 seconds. The National Weather Services issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northern Brevard at 3:15 p.m. Thursday and lifted it around 4:15 p.m.
