Lightning Strike Season is Here
Lightning is a natural phenomenon occurring during electrical storms. Central Florida is the “lightning strike capital of the world” with over 1 million strikes from June-August. Each year, lighting is the cause of an estimated 17,400 fires in the United States. Injuries and deaths per lightning strike and fire are relatively small. However, the annual physical property damage loss is $213 million, not including the cost of disruption to business operations. Electrical wiring is most affected by the lightning bolts that can reach up to 50,000 degrees. Local building codes do not require lightning rods or surge protection for business properties. “A Bolt of lightning is about 50,000 degrees and there’s always potential for damage when a lightning strike hits, it’s trying to seek ground. When you have that much heat, you have any type of sparks, which can produce fire immediately,” said Orange County Fire Rescue, Division Chief Mark Rhame. All risk assessment outcomes require adaquete protection on life safety systems such as fire alarm and mass notification systems. If you’re not sure about your facilities protection let the professionals at CSG help. CSG is offering for a limited time free onsite assessment to evaluate whether you have adequate surge and proper grounding protection. read more>>
